What They Share
Both teach flowing with the Tao rather than against it
The Tao -- the natural way of things -- is central to both. Neither believes in forcing life into rigid shapes; both counsel harmony with nature's flow.
Both value wu wei (effortless action)
Lao Tzu introduced wu wei as a principle; Zhuangzi illustrated it through stories of skilled craftsmen. Both teach that mastery looks effortless.
Both challenge conventional ideas of knowledge and status
Lao Tzu questioned the value of cleverness; Zhuangzi questioned the value of being useful. Both suggest that what society admires is often misguided.
