Epicurus

The Greek philosopher who found joy in less.

Often misunderstood as a lover of luxury, Epicurus taught the opposite. Real happiness comes from quiet pleasures, deep friendships, and the absence of needless fear.

Biography

Early Life

Born on the island of Samos around 341 BCE, Epicurus studied philosophy young and began teaching in his thirties. He eventually settled in Athens and opened his school in a garden outside the city walls.

Philosophy

Epicurus taught that pleasure is the highest good, but he meant the calm pleasure of a clear mind (ataraxia) and a body free from pain (aponia). Bread, water, friendship: enough to be deeply content.

Legacy

His school, the Garden, was unusual for accepting women and slaves. His ideas reached Lucretius, Montaigne, Jefferson, and modern hedonic psychology. He died in 270 BCE.
